    CFA Level III: Exam Format

    Mixed Format Questions

For the 2025 Level III exams, choose one of three specialized pathways: Private Wealth, Private Markets, and Portfolio Management

Candidates can choose the pathway most aligned with their interests and career goals at registration. Once registration is completed, the selected pathway cannot be changed.

`The exam will cover 65-70% common core topics, with the remaining 30-35% focused on the selected pathway. Questions related to the pathway will include both item sets and essays, similar to the common core

A single, mandatory 10-15 hour Practical Skills Module will be introduced for Level III exams during this window. The module will focus on Portfolio Construction, with more details to be provided soon by CFA Institute. While the module will not be graded, completion must be documented.

    Practical Skills Modules (PSM) Requirement

In addition to completing the exam, candidates must complete one Practical Skills Module (PSM) at each level to receive their exam result. The same module cannot be repeated across levels. Frequently Asked Questions on CFA Course

        CFA Program Overview

Why Choose the CFA Program in India?

The CFA in India Program equips aspiring and practicing investment professionals with the expertise and real-world skills needed to thrive in a competitive industry. Whether you're a student, switching careers, or advancing in investment and finance, it helps you achieve your professional goals.

        What is a CFA Charter?

The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) charter is a prestigious designation awarded to individuals who complete all three levels of the CFA® Program and meet the required work experience criteria. CFA charterholders earn the right to use the CFA designation and are recognized as qualified for senior and executive roles in investment management, risk management, asset management, and more.

How much study time is involved?

A candidate should plan to dedicate approximately 300 hours to prepare for the Level I exam. This includes 10-15 hours for a Practical Skills Module, which offers hands-on application of the concepts being studied.

How long does the CFA® course take?

The CFA® Program typically takes around 2 to 3 years to complete, depending on your preparation and exam schedule. It consists of three levels (Level I, II, III), and candidates need to pass each level sequentially. However, many candidates time their exam and are able to clear all 3 levels in 18 months. The recommended preparation time is about 300-400 hours per level, and exams are conducted multiple times a year for Level I (Feb, May, Aug, Nov) and less frequently for Level II (May, Aug, Nov) and Level III (Feb Aug).

How often are CFA® exams conducted, and what are the exam windows for each level?

The CFA® exams are conducted multiple times a year, with the frequency varying by level: • Level I: Exams are offered four times a year in February, May, August, and November, providing flexibility for candidates starting their CFA journey. • Level II: Exams are conducted three times a year in May, August, and November, allowing candidates to progress steadily after completing Level I. • Level III: Exams are offered twice a year, in February and August, focusing on advanced portfolio management and wealth planning. This scheduling enables candidates to plan their preparation and exam timeline based on personal and professional commitments while maintaining momentum in completing the program.

What is the mode of the CFA exam?

CFA Institute has moved all exams to computer-based testing, offering greater flexibility and the ability to quickly adapt to global or local changes. The exams are conducted in over 400 centers worldwide, and candidates may attempt the exam up to twice per year, but not in consecutive or closely spaced windows (less than six months apart). Each exam level has a maximum of six attempts.

        CFA Exam Details

        CFA vs. Other Qualifications

How is the CFA® Program different from CA?

The CFA® Program and CA are both prestigious qualifications but cater to distinct domains of finance. The CFA® Program is globally recognized and focuses on investment management, including areas such as equity research, portfolio management, wealth advisory, and financial analysis. It is particularly relevant for careers in investment banking, asset management, and global financial markets. In contrast, the Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification, primarily recognized in India, emphasizes areas like auditing, taxation, statutory compliance, and accounting standards, making it highly suited for careers in corporate finance, auditing, taxation, and financial reporting. While the CFA® Program prepares professionals for roles in finance and investments, CA is tailored for expertise in regulatory and compliance frameworks specific to India.

How is the CFA® Program different from CIMA?

The CFA® Program and CIMA are prestigious finance qualifications, but they differ significantly in their focus areas and career pathways. The CFA® Program is globally recognized for its specialization in investment management, covering topics like equity research, portfolio management, financial analysis, and wealth advisory. It is ideal for professionals aiming for careers in investment banking, asset management, hedge funds, and global financial markets. On the other hand, the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) qualification focuses on management accounting, emphasizing business strategy, performance management, risk management, and cost accounting. It prepares professionals for roles like management accountant, financial controller, and business strategist, with an orientation toward business decision-making and internal finance operations. While the CFA® Program is suited for those aspiring to excel in the financial markets and investment domain, CIMA is tailored for those pursuing roles in corporate finance and strategic management.

How is the CFA® Program different from CFP?

The CFP (Certified Financial Planner) and the CFA® Program are both finance qualifications but cater to different professional areas and skill sets. The CFA® Program is globally recognized for its focus on investment management and financial analysis, covering topics like portfolio management, equity research, derivatives, fixed income, and wealth advisory. It is best suited for careers in investment banking, asset management, hedge funds, and other roles in global financial markets. In contrast, the CFP focuses on personal financial planning, emphasizing areas such as retirement planning, tax planning, estate planning, insurance, and budgeting. It is designed for professionals providing comprehensive financial advice to individuals and families, making it ideal for roles in financial advisory and planning. While the CFA® Program prepares professionals for institutional investment roles, the CFP equips them to handle personal financial needs, with a stronger client-oriented focus.

Which is better - CFA or MBA?

The CFA® is highly specialized and geared towards finance professionals, while an MBA offers a broad business education. For a career in finance (such as investment banking, asset management, or financial analysis), the CFA® is the better option, as it provides a deep and specialized understanding of financial markets. In contrast, for broader business roles (such as management or consulting), an MBA would be more suitable.

        CFA for Non-Finance Backgrounds

I am an engineer; how will the CFA® Program help me?

Your engineering background gives you a strong foundation in quantitative analysis, critical thinking, and logical reasoning, which are highly valued in the finance industry. The CFA® Program will complement these skills by providing a structured understanding of global financial markets and enabling you to transition into roles where technical and financial expertise intersect, such as financial modeling, quantitative finance, or data-driven investment strategies, opening doors to careers in investment banking, asset management, financial consulting, and corporate finance.

This helps maintain security, prevent fraud, and ensure smooth processing during the exam.

Does the name on my passport need to match the name in my CFA® exam registration?

Yes, the name on your passport must exactly match the name in your CFA® exam registration. The CFA Institute requires this to ensure accurate identity verification and maintain the integrity of the exam process. Even minor discrepancies can result in issues, such as denial of entry to the exam center if the names don't match exactly. Important Tips: • Use the same name format (e.g., full name, correct order, and spellings) during registration as it appears on your passport. • If your name changes after registration (e.g., due to marriage), promptly update your CFA profile and provide supporting documents to the CFA Institute.
